Homeschooling Australia-Statistics on homeschoolers

Providing homeschool resources of enduring value

Although so many of us are 100% committed to homeschooling because we see the results in our children, its nice to have a few statistics to throw out to the dubious friends, family and the concerned shopkeeper.

In Australia estimates of home schooling are hard to find since many choose not to register with the Board of Studies. So these statistics are based on curriculum provider mail outs and lists.

Below is a breakdown of each state.  These would be the minimum

NSW -          10 000  students

(1400 registered. With Board of  Studies)

QLD             12 000 to 20 000 students

(based on surveys and mail outs.)

VIC              10 000  students

(based on curriculum suppliers and newsletters)

In October 2003, the Queensland government  released a report on home education in their state. They found that more people homeschool outside the current registration process than within it.  E. Sparks editor of Educational Choices believes 85% of home educators in Queensland aren’t registered.

This report also says in New Zealand and Canada, which have more favourable legislation towards homeschoolers, the statistics show approximately 1% to 1.7% of  the student population is home educated. Australian Population Statistics of School students attending government and non government schools in 2007 was 3,416,523 (Bureau of Statistics) . This statistic would not have included homeschooled students. 1.7% of this population is 58080.

So using these two statistics I believe the range would be between

29 000 and 57 000 home schooling students in Australia. A huge range I know!
