Our Sunburnt Country: An illustrated history of Australia tells the story of Australia's heritage, from Aboriginal settlement until the present. This work does not set out to be a detailed date and fact dissection of all that has happened.  Instead it offers the reader a smooth-flowing piece of good literature that captures the historical events that have shaped a nation.

The generous, delicate illustrations by Molly Johnson transform this text into a delightful work of art.

Using This Resource for Teaching Australian History

Charlotte Mason, a popular educator in home school circles, believed that history should be taught using great literature and not sketchy outlines of facts and dates. When possible she believed children should be taught in chronological order using interesting living books. Our Sunburnt Country is that kind of book. Each chapter separates a time in history and it lingers there for a while so that you get to understand the period.

To add to your Australian history studies and consolidate learning you can include timelines, a book of centuries and narrations. And when you want to delve deeper into one aspect of history pause and seek out other living books that concentrate on a biography, event or structure.

Book of Centuries and Timelines

An Australian Timeline is an excellent tool to help your child see the chronological order of events. It is best that they make it for themselves. We did a family history /Australian history timeline and depending on your family history you may find it quite helpful.

A Book of Centuries is a notebook where a student records facts, narrations, maps and sketches about the events of history as they occurred. For this reason it is best done using a loose leaf folder that you can shuffle and add extra pages as more information is added. For a free book of centuries Click Here.

Historical Narrations

A narration, in short, is the child telling back what they have learnt after reading. Narrations can be oral (spoken) or written. Using narration helps the child’s mind to act on the information taken in and then assimilate it in their mind so that they remember and absorb what they are hearing or reading. Narrations can be stored in the book of centuries. Narration is a cornerstone for homeschooling the Charlotte Mason way. Read more on this method.
