Nature Journaling is a great tool to use for science in the primary school and homeschooling environment
Excerpts are from The Wonderland of Nature Journal by Margaret Taylor and Michelle Morrow ©2007
There are no rules in nature journaling, so you can’t get it wrong. You and your children are simply observing the environment and recording what you see in an enjoyable way. This may be done with a pencil drawing (lead or coloured), a written narration, an article researched when you get home, perhaps a poem or a photograph. The use of the digital camera opens another realm in recording and technical skills.
With small children images may simply be stored in the memory or retained by colouring and cutting out a great picture, whatever suits your family, student or class.
The capabilities and interests of each child will influence the depth and scope of what they can do. The most important thing for you to remember is that nature journals are meant to be a personal expression of the one recording the journal. Many great things come from humble beginnings, so start your journal simply and remember the key is to begin and keep going.
