Nature Journaling is a great tool to use for science in the primary school and homeschooling environment Excerpts are from The Wonderland of Nature Journal by Margaret Taylor and Michelle Morrow ©2007
· A Book - How you put together your journal depends on personal preference. You can purchase a sketch book or place separate sheets in plastic protector slips in a folder. Remember this book needs to go outdoors into nature so make sure you have a hard surface to draw on. Your children can personalise it and make it feel like a 'real book'. · Pencils of differing hardness HB to 6B. · Water colour pencil set · Nature study books and field guides (plant, insect, bird). This is often the spark that gets us out and looking. That is why I (Michelle) love The Wonderland of Nature. Many times after reading a chapter on a particular insect we as a family would all go out hunting for that insect. We found many insects in our own backyard. · Binoculars or a magnifying glass · Specimen jar or collecting bag (using discretion as to what goes into these) · Glue and scissors.
Using drawing guides for children can help break down the complex pictures into simple achievable shapes. Using the illustrations from The Wonderland of Nature may also help as a guide. A good exercise is to cut a picture in half and paste it onto sketch paper and try to draw the other side in symmetry. |
