We are aware that there are very few Australian nature study resources neatly packaged and useable for the Australian student. Most have been written from a Northern Hemisphere perspective. So we put together The Wonderland of Nature Journal. This CD is a companion resource to The Wonderland of Nature. It has 3 parts on the CD: 1. HOW TO NATURE JOURNAL eBook Here we have provided some of our own ideas about nature journaling and nature study in an Australian environment, plus referenced some useful resources for nature journaling. We do not claim to be authorities on the subject, but we do know how to find useful information. Here are some excerpts from this eBook; · Nature Walks 2. FORTY DISCOVERY SHEETS (Great for multi-use) Each Discovery Sheet includes the essential observations of nature study, spaces for writing and nature sketching and simple suggestions and ideas to discuss on the topic, which you can adapt to the environment you are observing. Our goal is to help children develop the habit of observing the environment, recording and interpreting what is seen and felt. For the most part there are no right and wrong answers, as these are not revision worksheets, but rather aids to exploration and consolidation of the material covered in The Wonderland of Nature. Used weekly this resource will cover one year of primary science in your homeschool. 3.WEB LINKS Each discovery page has web links to current Australian websites and there is also a separate web links feature. Mac and Windows Compatible. Age range 4-12
SAMPLE NATURE JOURNAL We used this resource to nature journal last year with my kids. The children enjoyed it and they produced fantastic nature journals that they are proud of. Here are some samples from it. Find out more about nature journaling with kids.
Journal entry narration from The Wonderland of Nature Age 9 “One day Tess and Chris found a very big caterpillar in their garden hedge. Tess thought it couldn't get any bigger but it soon did. So they kept on feeding it. Then it burrowed down into the ground. So they waited two more weeks and then they checked on it. It was still a caterpillar but not all those nice colours, it was just a dull grey. They waited two more weeks then they heard a sound. They ran and got there just in time to see a beautiful moth flying off into the distance.”
